The lip dress from Yves Saint Laurent's 1971 "Libération" collection is highly revered and documented. The collection was inspired by 1940s wartime fashion, the women of occupied Paris, and the flea market dresses worn by Paloma Picasso. Saint Laurent interpreted vintage styles for the younger generation - the wartime silhouettes of thirty years previous. The lip dress was photographed by Helmut Newton on Viviane Fauny for the cover of Harpers & Queen in April 1971 and has been included in many YSL exhibitions. The dress is a black crepe rayon with contrasting all over red lip print. The v neckline is embellished with a large red floral pin and black buttons. A slight leg of mutton sleeve with ruching at the shoulders and zippers at cuffs. Fitted through the body with a flowing A-line mid length skirt. Side zipper closure. Upper unlined, skirt lined. Excellent vintage condition. Made in France. Collectors piece. The dress was reissued in 2014.
